Belts

All karate-ka start with white belt 8th kyu.   "Kyu" means grade or level below the black belt.   "Dan" means black belt grades (degrees). 8th kyu means the student is eight grades away from black belt, and work their way towards 1st kyu which is one grade away from black belt.   Whanake Rangataua karate award a tab on some belt colors which is the equivalent to a kyu or dan.

Classes

Trainings are held twice a week.  We train together - Juniors (6-12yrs), Intermediate (13-17yrs) and Adults (18+yrs). ​ Our Tuesday evening classes are focused on Kihon (basics) and Kata (or specific movements).   ​ ​Thursday nights are generally reserved for kumite (partner sparring). Dojo Etiquette

Always bow (rei) on entering and exiting the dojo training hall. Always bow to Sensei and Sempai on first seeing them and when departing. Always bow when joining or leaving class. Shoes should not normally be worn in the dojo training area. Be punctual for class. Refer to instructors as "Sensei", black belts as "Sempai", inside and outside the dojo.  First names are only used out

Grading System

Whanake Rangataua Karate has a grading system that allows all karate-ka to proceed through levels, ranks or grades, signifying their growth and development. Kata

Kata is a system of movements (forms) used in martial arts training.  They often consist of karate blocks, kicks and strikes organised into a pre-arranged fight against imaginary opponents.  One of the benefits of course is the applications you get from kata. Terminology

Many of these words will not be found in a Japanese-English dictionary.   In Japanese, the words and word order changes depending on whether one is speaking to an equal or friend, or a superior or to an inferior.   Many dojo terms, being command words, are not used in talking to Japanese people outside the dojo.
